It's not just about Telluride anymore

Michael Obermeyer "Telluride Fouth of July"
Click here to skip the review and go directly to the Telluride Official Guide.
When my friend and mentor Elizabeth asked me if I wanted to pick up the "Telluride Official Guide" which she and her husband had been running for 10 years, I jumped at the chance for easy money - Telluride is a world class ski resort, Festival Capital of the Rockies and one of the richest towns in America. I knew I was going to make millions.

But when I found out that no one in Telluride was interested in advertising during the Great Recession, and that the crash had left many businesses barely able to pay rent, much less advertise online, I got major discouraged.
Having only lived in Telluride for 18 months, I found it very hard to totally fit in and my discouragement only grew when I began to read the comment section of a local newspapers web site. These angry locals did not know me, but they felt the need to unfairly warn people of our web site and implied other hateful things about me (see the Crystal Angel Blog) and just about everyone anywhere - all anonymously of course.......and I thought the Moove Boards got out of hand...LOL.
After feeling blue one day over how mean people who live in the most beautiful place on the

The Telluride "Discussion" Ladies Keds
planet can be, Jill reminded me that anonymous comment sections are like bathroom walls at the Greyhound Bus Station in that anyone who has even a small thought can say anything and it makes them feel creative and important
But you cannot judge everyone who rides the bus by what is written. LOL. So now I wash my hands after reading the local comment forums just to be safe.

I was so surprised at the lack of joy in living in paradise that when I was designing the Limited Edition "San Juan Skyway" line of Ladies Keds for each town on the Skyway, I made one called "Discussion?" with some of the more printable comments. LOL. It made me feel kinda better.
It is not that the locals in Telluride are a mean bunch (the ones I have met seemed nice enough) but they are having a tough time handling the recession. Realtors are going broke, tourists really cannot afford the high prices that made Telluride a favorite hideaway for the rich and famous and jobs have dried up leaving dozens of empty store fronts and worried job seekers. It is a stark contrast to the days when money flowed like the San Miguel river and nobody gave any mind paying $9.00 for a burger (fries extra).

But like many places that quickly grew wealthy off the Real Estate boom; Telluride had no idea how bad the recession would affect the lives of the residents who had enjoyed a life of luxury. They do now.
My partner Jill says Telluride reminds her of Paris Hilton if she ever lost all of her money. LOL. Can you even imagine how bitchy she would get? That is sadly what has kinda happened here in Telluride.
The people are indeed wonderful and I am sure the kindness and hospitality will quickly return, but it is a hard time in this beautiful town these days and the residents of Telluride are a "passionate" bunch.
With the Telluride community all riled up about everything, I decided to call my friend Henry54 in Tulsa and invite him and his sweety Ailsa out to Colorado and go on a vacation with me. When in doubt...TRAVEL!.
Henry and Ailsa agreed to come and hang out with me since Mela was in France at a meeting with our financial backers, and it was decided that I would pick up my friends at the Denver International Airport on the following Thursday.
One of my great joys is showing fellow Avatars around my Real world, otherwise known as Colorado - and nothing in Colorado can compare with the beauty of the San Juan Mountain region in the Southwest Corner of the State.
Rugged and remote, a group of unique communities have sprouted and thrived in these mountains - individual in character but each connected by a love for the wild country that surrounds them.
I sat at my desk in my cabin and looked over the map, trying to decide a route to take on our journey. It did not take me long to decide on the San Juan Skyway - a circular route that would take us from the highest peaks to the lowest valleys to the edge of the desert.
The sheer cliffs and rugged terrain of the San Juan Skyway boast some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth, regardless of which season you visit.
In the Spring, crashing waterfalls tumble down the cliffs as the snow melts in the higher mountains.
Wildflowers cover the alpine forests in the summer months, while in the Autumn, amber, bronze, and gold of the aspen trees delight visitors.
Winter brings a glistening blanket of snow to the byway, perfect for quiet reflection or more active recreation.
The Skyway enjoys the honor of being an All-American Road (Designated September, 1996), a National Forest Scenic Byway (Designated September, 1988) and a Colorado Scenic & Historic Byway (Designated 1989). To be honest, these fancy titles do not give this beautiful area justice. I think it would be simpler to just say....The Official American WOW Highway.
So take some time off and travel with us to the small but exciting towns of Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Cortez, Rico, Telluride and Norwood. Relax with us in hot springs, camp high above Rico, ride the rapids on the Dolores river, attend the local horse races and treat yourself to the most luxurious spa treatment anywhere - all with an Angel as your guide....OH YEAH, bring your cowboy hat and boots.
