The price of Gasoline is rising faster than
a runaway kite. What you can do to save a
little money..
Continued from Page 3 Being a good steward of our natural surroundings
is more than just not buying stuff made with
palm oil or seeing if your stock or 401(k)
invests in companies (like Carghill) that
enslave Amazonia natives and destroys the
jungle. We just need to change our habits. I was curious why gas was going so high,
so I began to watch Fox Business and MSNBC
and read a lot on the Internet. The more
I studied, the more confused I got. For example, the people in Washington DC
and running for President want to tax the
Oil Company's profits, but those profits
do not belong to the OIL COMPANY, they belong
to the people who have stock in the company whether directly
or through 401(k)'s, Mutual Funds or other
investments. So really, that idea will just tax people
who are already strapped for cash. Just for
the record, the Oil Companies do not set
the price of gas or oil, that is done by
the Commodity Markets. The commodity oil is not the same as oil
company stocks. Commodities include Oil, Corn, Soybeans, Copper and
even orange juice. If you think the price
will go up, you buy. The more people that
buy, the less of that commodity there is
so...the price goes up. Once the price is
set, the suppliers are pretty well locked
into that price. Oil Companies are suppliers. While all price increases in any commodity
we consume is unpleasent at the supermarket,
the big daddy of all of them is oil. Light,
sweet crude oil to be exact. It is used to
make fuel, to haul and manufacture all the
other commodities. So when oil goes up, investors
(or speculators) who bought it at a cheaper
price make money, but the rest of us end
up paying more after it is refined into gasoline
or used in the millions of products we use
and throw away. Like bottled water bottles. Supply and demand also plays a big role.
With China, India and other developing countries
booming, the need for oil, both as a fuel
and to manufacture and transport the other commodities
increases. That is more demand. If the Oil companies and OPEC do not increases
the amount of oil taken from the ground,
then there is less oil. That is the supply
side. The only thing that will lower gasoline prices
is either more supply or less demand. We either find more oil, make more gasoline
and lower the price....or we use less gas
and oil so that the demand is not so high.
Low demand means lower prices. it is just
the way things are suppose to work and usually
do. The problem is that demand will keep growing
and the supply of oil is shrinking. Even
if they found 500 trillion barrels of oil
in Jed Clampetts yard, the price of gasoline
would not be guaranteed to come down. Unleaded
Gas is also a commodity, so it also has its
own supply and demand rules that decide how
expensive that trip to Wally World will be
this week. To turn oil to gas you need refineries and
the ones in the United States and almost
everywhere are working around the clock.
A new refinery has not been built in America
for 32 years. So even if we had oil coming
out of our ears, it does us no good if we
cannot make it into gasoline So what can we do? Well, I do not think we
can change the world, but we can make an
impact in our lives while doing the right
thing.....and doing the right thing does
not always mean it cannot be fun and make
your life better and more exciting. Like
buying a scooter.

it down significantly.
If you live in the city, a small town or
in a nearby suburb, a scooter may be an idea
whose time has come. Most people have heard of Vespa, Honda, Yamaha
and Suzuki scooters, but few outside of Europe
have seen or drooled over a Piaggio....wait
...make that a Piaggio MP3 500. With aggressive styling and performance,
the Piaggio MP3 500 is the three-wheeler
for people who want to stand out.
‘Safe fun’ is no
longer an oxymoron. Riding
has never been this
easy, enjoyable and secure.
Two front wheels
and a revolutionary parallelogram
front suspension
together with the new double
ignition Master 500ie
engine give the MP3
500 very racy performance
while remaining
exceptionally safe. The MP3 500’s innovative looks are striking.
The front end of the MP3 500 has a decisive
shape that expresses strength and character
and hints at the incredible performance of
the all-new 492cc single cylinder engine.
The front two wheels are marked by a steel
tube bumper with metal mesh inserts that
give the vehicle a rugged look. The front
design protects the rider and the mechanicals
while putting the unique front suspension
technology on display. Other touches are
the sleek ‘naked’ metal handlebar and black
ten-spoke wheel rims. The five-lamp headlight unit is not only
striking to look at but highly effective
as well; the two biggest lamps are equipped
with off-road-style shockproof covers. The
front fairing and front shield fairing offer
remarkable aerodynamic protection. There
is a wide, comfortable footrest panel behind
the front shield fairing.
The steel tube frame conceals the powerful,
reliable new Master
500 i.e. double ignition
engine, a four-valve,
four-stroke unit with
electronic injection
and liquid cooling.
The capacity of the new Master engine has
been upped to 492cc
to obtain maximum power
of 40 hp at 7,250
rpm and maximum torque
of over 42 Nm at
5,500 rpm. The introduction of the twin spark system
has also made it
possible to optimize combustion
inside the cylinder,
with a reduction in
noise and gas emissions.
The result is a
smooth, high-performance
engine, very torquey
at low and medium
range rpm, that takes the Piaggio MP3 500 to a top speed of nearly
90 mph while fully
respecting U.S. emissions
standards thanks
to the advanced closed
loop
injection circuit
with a Lambda sensor
and
three-way catalytic
converter in the
exhaust
pipe. Too much power? Nawwwwww, but Piaggio also
offers two less powerful
versions: the MP3-250
and the MP3-400.
Both are safe for driving
on most roads with
the exception of the interstate
highways. Gas Milege? How does 70 miles per gallon
sound with a 200 mile range? The top of the line MP3-500 runs about $8900.00
USD Mela just had to have one. The MP3 500 is
the ultimate when
it comes to aggressive
scooter riding. It
streaks away from traffic
lights and takes
all kinds of terrain in
stride, handling
tough city streets just
as well as twisty
mountain roads. 500cc's
of power combined
with MP3's revolutionary
parallelogram front
suspension ensures impeccable
road holding in all
riding conditions, with
stability and braking
power that no conventional
scooter can provide.
Of course, there are other scooters on the
market. I love the Vespa and the Pillagio
X9 which tops out at 98 MPH. Besides being
fun, kewl to look at and bold as a prize
bull, you are helping the environment and
lessening your demand for more oil and gas.
Remember, less demand means lower prices. There is one thing that riding a scooter
will not help you with - deciding who to
vote for this upcoming election. But, you
now know that much of the "pretend solutions"
coming out of Washington DC are just plain
silly. Suspending taxes will not help, taxing the
Oil Companies will not help, even Ethanol
production will not help as it is set up
now. Ethanol is currently made mostly with corn
(remember corn is also a commodity) so the
more farm land that is used for Ethanol production
means less corn for food and for livestock
feed. This then causes these commodities
to be in more demand...and THAT IS RIGHT...more
demand means higher prices. Since we as individuals cannot increase the
supply, we just simply have to cut our demand.
Be smart, be careful and understand that
short of nationalizing all oil companies,
there is really nothing any politician or
Presidential candidate can do...except make
promises. Now, if we could only figure out
a way to make fuel from hot air. We could
be energy independent just from the hot air
coming out of Washington DC.
