A New Designer Brings his Creations to Moove Leather, Fur, Bankok and Kelly Pickler
by Tory When we decided to begin featuring a different
male designer each month, we ran into the
same problem we always seem to when choosing
a person of interest for an article - who
do we choose? The choice was once again not
easy - but getting to fly to Bankok free
to interview Mr. Damion tipped the scales. I took off from Rose International Airpark
and arrived in Bankok some 16 hours later.
Mr. Damion had his limo driver and three
of his entourage (fabulous Russian models)
meet me at the airport and I was whisked
off to The Sukhothai Bangkok Hotel, where
I collapsed from exaustion in my fabulous
suite. I was awakened the next morning with breakfast
in bed served by the Hotel butler who informed
me I was to picked up promptly at 10:00 a.m.
by Mr. Damions driver. I decided on a new
white outfit from Angels Boutique, white
platforms from C@ndis and white wings. I
did not wish to over due the fashion statement
as Mr. Damion has seen it all, so I felt
an understated elegance was in order. After a two hour 15 mile ride through the
clogged streets of Bankok (one of the most
interesting rides in my life), I arrived
at Mr. Damions office where I was led into
a glass walled office overlooking downtown
Bankok. Mr. Damion strikes an imposing presence -
tall and handsome with a slight southern
accent, it is understandable why he was voted
one of Mooves most available bachelors in
2006. He was casually dressed in a wonderful
tweed short sleeve with a pair of blue jeans.
Both created by Mr. Damion. As the sun beamed through his windows and
his ever present Russian Models / Bodyguards
enjoyed Vodka Jello shots at the bar, Mr.
Damion showed me his latest Collection which
he calls the Eden Collection.
Selections from the Eden Collection
Following my private showing of The Eden
Collection, I was asked to accompany Mr.
Damion on a leather and fur buy in the central
shopping district of Old Bankok. Old Bankok
is home to the Chinese and Indian districts
where the most sought after fabrics and furs
can be found. We took his Limo on another wild ride dodging
shoppers and darting cars. During the ride
I asked Mr. Damion about the rumor that he
had a short fling with Kelly Pickler of American
Idol fame. I thought Mr. Damion would pass
out from laughing. When he gathered his composure,
Mr. Damion told me he does not kiss and tell,
but the rumor may have come from Kelly wearing
Mr. Damions designs on her debut on the Grand
Ole Opry. I still don't believe him (wink wink). We arrived at the Bazaar by mid-afternoon
and Mr. Damion immediatly began haggling
in Mandarin over a bolt of Mongolion silk.
When a deal was reached the old Chinese merchant,
we visited a fur dealer where Mr. Damion
purchased a variety of Asian and African
exotics. Our final stop was a leather merchant
filled with wild boar, ostrich, water buffalo
and alligator. We sat and enjoyed hot green
tea and small sugar almond cookies while
a deal for the finest leathers in stock was
finalized. We strolled the bazaar and I asked Mr. Damion
about his use of wild game and rare furs
in his designs. He explained that his natural
materials are harvested from game ranches
and the rarest furs are taken by animals
who have died of natural causes. We caught a small canal boat down the Chao
Phraya River and enjoyed the afternoon sun
and sounds of the city. I enjoyed traveling
by canal boat much more than through the
hectic streets in Mr. Damion's limo. Mr.
Damion was at ease and we talked about everything
from his branching into designing actors
to a new line of pajamas to his foray into
casual mens clothing. We left the boat near Queen Sirikit National
Convention Center and Mr. Damion took me to The China House restaurant in The Oriental
Bangkok hotel and we relaxed on the deck
as the sun set on the day. Sipping on fancy
cocktails and talking about the far off places
Mr. Damion has been in his quest for the
finest fabrics and materials the world has
to offer. It was at this point I realized
we lost his three model / body guards, but
Mr. Damion assured me they were near by. Mr. Damion has in the past only created designer
outfits to order, but he told me that he
is preparing to open a three Show Rooms -
one in Paris and one in New York and of course
his Premier Showroom in Rose.
The Tigress of the Eden Collection
I would have loved to have stayed longer
enjoying the company of Mr. Damion, but I
was booked on an 11:30 P.M. redeye out of
Bankok International and the deadline for
the Mag was coming up fast. Mr. Damion would
not allow me to catch a taxi and called for
his Limo which appeared at the same time
as his three model / bodyguards. After yet
another crazy ride, I was back at my hotel
where I completed and e-mailed my article
and prepared to leave Bankok. As the airplane took off and I enjoyed First
Class (courtesy of Mr. Damion), I looked
out the window at the sprawling lights below
and thought that somewhere down there was
Mr. Damion and his three hot model / bodyguards
working to make sure that Rose has its share
of leather, fur and style. I drifted off
to sleep dreaming of Kelly Pickler...go figure.
