Cajun Fest Returns With a Smokin Hot Lineup
The Louisiana bayou comes to Mountain Village July 15 with the Second Annual Telluride Cajun Festival, and organizer Teddy Errico promises the music will be every bit as hot as the Cajun cuisine served up Louisiana-style at this year's festival location, at the base of chair 4. Returning to Telluride to headline the festival is Papa Grows Funk, the band that's been storming audiences since the release of its live CD from the Maple Leaf in New Orleans. Led by keyboardist John Gros, who has previously played for George Porter Jr.'s Runnin' Pardners, Papa Grows Funk has drawn rave reviews for its New Orleans funk and integration of R&B, jazz and blues without upsetting the tightly wound, often repetitive rhythms and vamps that make their style distinctive. Since their inception as a New Orleans house band in 2000, Papa Grows Funk has grown into a worldwide touring act. Making their debut in Telluride, The Hot 8 Brass Band brings their funky horn harmonies to the festival and will certainly get people dancing. The Hot 8 Brass Band has been central to New Orleans street music for over a decade and are featured annually in the City of New Orleans' Mardi Gras Parade. Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers are also new to the Telluride music scene. Living up to their reputation as the most innovative and musically accomplished young Zydeco band on the scene, they have drawn critical acclaim for their funky Zydeco sound, Z-Funk. Brilliantly drawing upon contemporary urban black sounds while being respectful of their Zydeco roots, Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers are a great addition to the festival lineup. "These three artists are all being featured at the 2006 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and we are very proud and excited to have them perform in Telluride," says Errico. The Telluride Cajun festival has a new site this year at the base of chair four, near the lower Misty Maiden ski trail. Working with both the Town of Mountain Village and the Telluride Ski and Golf Company, organizers were able to secure this new Mountain Village core location that will offer easy access via the Telluride gondola system, as well as feature a natural ampitheater with its sloping, natural grass terrain. Also new to the festival: A VIP section featuring private seating, eating area and crawfish boil. Telluride's Fat Alley will serve up an incredible array of Cajun cuisine, including, but not limited to crawfish, po' boys, gumbo and jambalaya. "We promise to make it good and unique," said Fat Alley's Robby O'Dell. Tickets are available at Wizard Entertainment and www.tellurideticket.com for $30. Tickets include entry into the festival grounds and live music.
