San Miguel: Telluride and San Miguel Valley
The San Miguel is one of only two free flowing
rivers left in Colorado.
This stream originates in the high mountain
basins surrounding Telluride and has miles
of accessible fishing.
While the main river holds mostly Brown and
Rainbow Trout, the headwaters and small side
creeks are home to Brookies and Cutthroats.
The summer and fall months provide wonderful
dry fly fishing. Novice anglers will discover
that the San Miguel river is an excellent
location to improve skills. The experienced
angler will find many challenging situations
. Telluride is blessed to have this natural
environment right in our back yard.
The Gunnison: Black Canyon, Montrose and
Delta
The lower fourteen miles of the Black Canyon
of the Gunnison River allow Gold Medal fishing
for large Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Designated as a Wilderness Study Area where
access is difficult, few locations in Colorado
provide the combination of excellent fishing,
spectacular wildlife and unmatched scenery
.
All trips into the Black Canyon Gorge are
pack-in, pack-out; please follow all regulations
and help us keep this incredible resource
in its pristine condition. Tread Lightly!
The Dolores: Hwy. 145 below McPhee Dam outside
Cortez
Just South of Telluride, the Dolores River
begins its long and majestic journey from
the high country above Lizard Head Pass.
The "Upper Dolores" (Lizard Head
Pass to the town of Dolores) is a free flowing
river much like the San Miguel.
Below the McPhee Reservoir is an eleven mile
stretch of Quality Waters home to monster
Cutthroats, Browns and Rainbows. This tailwater
characteristically contains choosey trout
that can only be fooled by small flies .
This river can challenge even the top anglers.
Area Lakes and Ponds
The Telluride area also contains numerous
High Mountain Lakes open to fishing. The
many stocked lakes can be a great learning
experience for the novice. In some lakes
where stocking has not occurred, the trout
have grown huge, and tough to fool.
Kids' Fishin' Pond: Telluride Town Park for
ages 12 and under.
Alta Lakes: 9 mi. SW on Hwy. 145, left at
Alta Lakes access road, then 5 mi. up.
Priest Lake: 12 mi. S on Hwy. 145, below
Trout Lake.
