Moving to Telluride can be an exciting time but it can also
be full of potential pitfalls and challenges.
The first thing you must do is locate housing
which is scarce and very expensive.
Housing:
Please be aware if you have dogs, finding
an apartment is virtually impossible.
In addition, most of the few available rental
properties will run a credit check on potential
renters to insure applicants fit into the
changing demographics of Telluride.
Once you locate an available place to live,
be prepared to pay up to three times the
rent to move in.
With the average of rents running around
$1300.00 per month, you should be ready to
pay up to $3900.00 to move into your new
digs.
The waiting list for affordable housing is
very long and applicants are often required
to wait up to two years before an apartment
becomes available.
Once again, if you are planning on moving
to Telluride with a dog, be ready to search
hard and long for a place to live.
Employment
Due to the lack of housing for employees,
jobs are very easy to find with dishwashers
wages beginning around $12.00 per hour and
retail employees beginning around $16.00
per hour. Although this sounds like a great
wage, please be aware that few Telluride
businessses offer insurance or profit sharing
plans and the cost of living in Telluride
is quite high. Never accept a job that does
not offer a free ski pass.
On a positive
note, cars
are not needed once
you arrive
in Telluride,
unless you need
to do laundry
(Telluride
has no Laundromat)
or travel to
Wal-Mart in
Montrose (to avoid
paying the
high prices
charged by local businesses).
Community
Once you get into your new home and find
a job, be sure to get involved in one of
the many local community activities or events.
By getting involved you will avoid the feeling
of being left-out of the community and will
be accepted by the locals much more quickly.
