Only sites with high elevation changes and scenic environments were considered. The site chosen was a century-old cedar forest with a vertical matched by only two ski areas in all of Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota, from Duluth to St. Louis. Since 1973 we have focused on preserving the natural winter beauty of our mountain, and on snowmaking and grooming to provide the best possible ski conditions. The founding skiers are on the slopes every day all winter long to see that the beauty and snow conditions are the best they can be. In 1989 the National Ski Area Association awarded Sundown the Award of Excellence. No other midwest ski area has received this award.
